What I Ate in a Day as a Premed

I want to get one thing out there. Despite the pictures of vegetables on the homepage, this is not a extra healthy, all-natural food blog of someone who eats super cleanly.

This is just me going throughout my life as a premed student in college, documenting everything I'm learning on the road to being healthier. I love seeing others' journeys to try to live a healthy life, so I though I would put my own life out there to maybe encourage someone whose trying to make some changed like I am.

I figure that if one say people are going to trust their health to me as a doctor, the least I can do is take care of my own health.

For the last few weeks, I've really been trying to get into the habit of eating a little better because I can always feel the effects of eating better on my body. I am definitely enjoying having (slightly) better skin and getting less tired when it comes to small things like climbing up a few flights of stairs.

But enough about that, without further ado, here's what I ate today..

Brunch:

I woke up super late today so after I went on my walk this morning, I had a big "brunch" (but really lunch) at 12:30 PM today.

I ate this meal at the dining hall today and as usual I just browsed around for what looked best. Eventually I ended up picking a plate with the vegan curry with yellow peppers, brown rice, and pinto beans before adding  some boiled beets and sauteed mushrooms to my plate. I absolutely LOVE the mushrooms they have in my dining hall- they always taste so good!

Also, I was super excited to see that the curry they were serving at the dining hall was vegan! I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian (as you'll see from what else I ate throughout the day), but I am trying out eating one vegan meal a day just to see if eating more vegan foods would be something I would be able to sustain as a college student.

I have a mental list of things that I think I could give up easily to become vegan:
 dairy, honey, or beef/pork
...and things I know it would be super hard for me to give up to become vegan:
 fish, chicken, and eggs.

Not pictured above: I also had a piece of a giant veggie sandwich made on a baguette with some carrots, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, and avocado on it. It was so good!

Snack 1:

After I finished brunch/lunch I had a large cup of vanilla almond milk and had ate a "breakfast bar" with cranberries and nuts in it for a treat. I forgot to take a picture of it but it was super tasty- not too sweet at all. This was my first time having dessert for 3 weeks because I finally felt like I was starting to kick my sugar addiction, and didn't want to feel like I was depriving myself .

Dinner:

At around 6:00 PM I heated up the rest of the homemade chicken and vegetable curry I had in the fridge and added a little more chicken. I also had a cup of decaf green tea since I didn't drink it in the morning like usual.

I try to drink the decaf beverages because I'm afraid of becoming one of those college students who needs caffeine to stay awake in class, so for the most part I stay away from coffee and caffeine (though I do have a weakness for chocolate).

Snack 2:

I don't usually eat late at night, but I figured that I should listen to my body and use that hunger to get some more good food in me. I think that sleeping through breakfast caught up with me! I actually had a bunch of snacks. I ate a green apple with some peanut butter, some sunflower seeds, and even a little bit of chocolate that a friend had given me. (Still working on the whole sugar in moderation thing). At the end of the night I had a nice warm cup of ginger tea before relaxing a bit more. What a great day!
